Opening of the Music School
We have a very busy time in the Music School next week. Firstly, on Monday there will be an Informal Concert at lunchtime from 1.30 pm. This will be followed by a Senior Soloists Concert on Tuesday from 4.45 pm. Then on Thursday, visiting guitarist (and Old Dumptonian) Will McNicol will be running a masterclass for Mr Albin’s 40 guitarists in the afternoon, followed by a concert at 4.45 pm. Finally, we have ten or so Old Dumptonians returning for a concert in the Recital Room on Friday evening from 7 pm, before which former Dumpton Headmaster and wife Garth and Barbie Watson will formally open the Music School.
Seeds from Outer Space
There is a keen group of pupils monitoring Tim Peake's Rocket Seed project. They have sown 200 seeds in carefully controlled conditions, half of which have spent several months on the International Space Station. The pupils do not know which is which - so will report the seeds' rate of germination and growth back to Mission Control without bias.
FODs Dragons’ Den
Other Dumpton children have recently presented at the parent-led Dragons' Den, bidding for funding for pupil-led projects. As a result Year 7 pupils have successfully ordered a shedful (literally) of new spades, forks and rakes for the 60+ allotmenteers, and a Reception class have convinced the Dragons to sanction the purchase of a Garden Tower. This is a rotating, vertical planting system (complete with internal wormery) for up to fifty plants. Ideal for little gardeners!
Good luck to William P (Year 6) and Tim J (Year 7) who will be representing a Great Britain team at an international tournament in Belgium later in the month. They will be two of 258 players from 41 countries across four continents. There is even an opening ceremony!
There was another long list of fixtures and encouraging results on Wednesday against Walhampton, Port Regis, Forres Sandle Manor and BCPS. There was also a big athletics meeting at Clayesmore with 10+ schools taking part. Congratulations to the many competitors who ran, jumped or threw personal bests so early in the season, and to Thomas N (100m), Joshua S (800m), Dominic H (800m and HJ). Esther B (800m), Joe W (1500m), Morgan B (LJ and HJ), Alexandra S (HJ), Lucas S (Shot) and Jessica K (Shot) who won their individual events on the day, along with the boys Year 6 sprint relay team of William and Oliver S, Howard G and Dominic H.
Year 4 Camps
Do spare a thought for the pupils of 4G who will be under canvas, or its modern day equivalent, at Dumpton this evening. The weather looks much warmer than of late and the campfire is being built as I write. We look forward to handing the children back to their parents (reasonably) well rested at 9 am tomorrow - it is 4P’s turn next Friday…..
Year 6 have had a busy week, returning from France last weekend, and then enjoying an extremely entertaining Roman Day yesterday, baking traditional honey cake, making mosaics and an amphitheatre, taking part in military drill and performing Roman drama, viewing archaeological finds and generally celebrating life in southern Italy around 2000 years ago – there were togas and gladiators at every turn…
