Today we welcomed our local MP, Michael Tomlinson, to speak to all the pupils in the Prep School. The children came up with some impressive questions, putting our right honourable guest very much on the spot. The democratic process continued later in the day as representatives from each form met at the Dumpton Parliament at lunchtime. Lots of ideas came to the fore as ever, and we will look to respond to as many of them as possible over the coming terms.
Remembrance Day at Dumpton
This is always a special day in our calendar, as we meet around the War Memorial in the centre of the school at 11 am, on the 11th day of the 11th month. This year, we will have a special guest to speak to the pupils at School Assembly on Tuesday 10 November. Dumpton great-grandparent Mr Roy Massey was a prisoner of war in Japan during the Second World War. Well into his nineties he continues to speak to children about his experiences which are particularly poignant at this time of year.
Gala Music Concerts
There are two major music concerts later in the term, one for Years 3-5 at 5.30 pm on Friday 20 November and one for Years 6-8 at 5.30 pm on Friday 4 December. Both of these will start later than usual, hopefully allowing many friends and family to attend. As a result they will continue on after the end of the normal school day finishing around 6.15 pm. Before these there will be an Informal Lunchtime Singers’ Recital next Friday (13 November).
FODS Christmas Party & Christmas Fayre: from the Chair of FODs
The tables for the Christmas Party sold out within three days of tickets going on sale. A drinks and canapé ticket is now available at £15 per person allowing more people to join the party. The ticket includes a welcome drink and a selection of delicious canapés in the upstairs bar at Branksome Beach restaurant, followed by drinks and dancing in the main restaurant, 8.15pm – midnight. Please put envelopes with guest names and a cheque made payable to ‘Friends of Dumpton School’, in the FODS box in the front office please by 20 November.
“Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, does not come from a store” He was right – it comes from Dumpton!
The Christmas Fayre is set to be an exciting whole school event for students, family and friends. In the meantime, pre order forms are attached for Christmas cakes. Please get your order in early to avoid disappointment. Workshop bookings (for child free shopping time!) and Santa’s Grotto bookings will be taken from Monday (9 November) by the Front Office. Both activities are £5 per child. Please see our Christmas Fayre poster attached.
News from the Sportsfield
Well done again to all the pupils for some committed performances last Wednesday on the rugby pitch and astro. Results at two Year 6 tournaments were particularly impressive. The U11 girls topped their group and came 3rd from 18 schools in the Bryanston Hockey Tournament. Meanwhile, the U11 boys played their hearts out at the Canford Rugby Fesitival, winning all group games without conceding a try, before losing narrowly, in the last minute of the final. As a result, they were the first winners of the Canford Attacking Spirit Shield.
Children in Need
On Thursday 12 November, we have the annual Children in Need celebration. The stalls will be set up in the Sports Hall and ready from 3.30 pm for the Pre-Prep, 4.15 pm for Years 3, 4 and 5 and 4.45 pm for Years 6, 7, and 8. Parents are, of course, welcome, and I would like to thank you in advance for your contributions to the stalls. Each form in the Prep School has come up with ideas for their own money-raising ventures and we hope to build towards the totals of recent years.
Once again we have been bowled over by the sheer mass of toys donated this year. Thank you very much for your offerings so far. Any last minute contributions will be welcome right up to the morning of the sale. Last call also for donkeys, shepherds, angels and any other Christmas production costumes or indeed any other fancy dress items which can be traded on the day …..
Tutor Group meetings
Looking ahead, there is one more Informal Tutor Group Evening from 6 pm in the Dining Hall next week, for Year 5 on Tuesday (10 November).
We welcome Nick Tiller this half term, a new Student Teaching Assistant (STA) who replaces Joe Juchniewicz. Nick is currently studying Sports Development and Coaching Sciences at Bournemouth University.
Operation Christmas Child
Thank you to those who have supported Operation Christmas Child so far. We have an ever-increasing pile of brightly wrapped shoeboxes in the Front Hall and a final collection date planned for Wednesday 11 November.
